SKS to AK Mag Adapter Kit

The TNA SKS to AK Mag Adapter Kit allows you to convert your SKS to accept compatible AK-pattern magazines.

This installation requires more modification than our SKS to AR15 Mag Adapter, but the overall concept and installation process are similar.

The kit consists of three main assemblies:

• Front Clamp Assembly – Provides the front magazine engagement point.
• Latch Assembly – Includes the paddle-style magazine release.
• Magazine Height Stop – Controls the maximum height of the rear of the magazine.

Installation & Fitment

Some minor fitting may be required during installation due to differences in SKS manufacturing tolerances and variations between AK magazine manufacturers.

The Front Clamp Assembly may require minor adjustment to the section that interfaces with the OEM duckbill magazine catch point. This can be done using a Dremel, grinder, or file.

The Latch Assembly may also require minor fitting to the rail section depending on the thickness of your trigger housing. A needle file can be used for minor adjustments.

The Magazine Height Stop is designed to slide into the OEM bolt-stop rails after the OEM bolt stop is removed.

Installation

Before Starting

Ensure the firearm is completely unloaded and safe before beginning any work.

1. Remove the trigger group.
2. Remove the firearm from the stock.

Firearm Modifications

• Perform the required bolt modification to allow magazine changes with the bolt closed.
• Mill the receiver to allow the AK magazine well to fit inside the existing magazine well area.
• Cut the step underneath the barrel so the front of the AK magazine can properly sit in position.
• Remove the sharp edge created on the bottom of the receiver when widening the magazine well area.
• Remove the OEM bolt catch/stop from its rails by removing the retaining dowel pin.
• Once the OEM bolt stop is removed, slide the new plastic magazine height stop into the rails.
• Reinstall the retaining roll pin.

Stock Modifications

Material must be removed from the stock to provide clearance for the AK magazine.

You may also need to remove additional material to allow the I-beam-shaped section of the Front Clamp Assembly to clear the stock.

Trigger Group Modifications

• Grind away the ears on the front of the trigger group, ahead of the OEM magazine catch, to provide clearance for the AK magazine.
• Remove the OEM magazine catch by removing the retaining dowel pin.
• Install the new AK magazine catch/latch assembly.
• Ensure the spring behind the OEM magazine catch remains in place behind the new AK magazine catch assembly.

Magazine Compatibility

No modification to the magazines should normally be required, assuming the magazines being used are similar in dimensions.

However, AK magazines from different manufacturers and countries can vary in dimensions, which may affect fitment.

Unlike a standard AK, where most of the magazine hangs below the firearm, this adapter positions a portion of the magazine inside the SKS receiver area. Because of this, differences in the thickness of the magazine's front catch can affect compatibility.

During testing, we found that:

• Metal AK magazines typically have thinner front magazine catches.
• Polymer Magpul magazines, such as the MAG572, typically have thicker front magazine catches.
• If the adapter is fitted around the thinner catch found on metal magazines, some polymer magazines may not fit.
• If the adapter is fitted around the thicker catch found on polymer magazines, metal magazines should generally fit.

Magazine fitment can vary depending on the manufacturer and specific magazine used.

• Small Clamp Piece: Steel, QPQ nitride
• Large Clamp Piece: Spring steel, QPQ nitride
• Magazine Catch: 4150 chromoly steel, QPQ nitride
• Magazine Catch Holder: Steel, QPQ nitride

Important Information

This is a gunsmithing/modification project and requires machining and fitting of the firearm, stock, and trigger group. The amount of fitting required can vary depending on the SKS and magazines being used.

If you are not comfortable performing the required modifications, we recommend having the work completed by a qualified gunsmith.
