The Crusader Arms Backland Hunter Comp blends the familiar ergonomics of the AR-15 platform with the proven operating system of the Benelli M4, creating a unique semi-automatic rifle designed for competition, sport shooting, and hunting.
While the rifle's controls and handling have been modernized with AR-style ergonomics, its operating system is derived from the Benelli M4. The Backland Hunter uses a Benelli-style bolt carrier and recoil system that cycles into a spring-loaded buffer tube to absorb recoil and return the action to battery. Crusader Arms adapted this proven design to the 5.56 chambering, allowing the rifle to safely fire both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO ammunition, while utilizing a direct gas impingement system to help reduce weight.
The Comp model is built around AR-style controls, accepting aftermarket AR-15 triggers, AR-15 safety selectors, and AR-15 pistol grips, giving shooters access to a wide range of aftermarket components. The redesigned lower also incorporates an AR-style magwell, positioning the firing hand naturally for quick access to the magazine release without breaking grip, providing a familiar shooting experience for AR users.
A full-length Picatinny top rail allows for the installation of optics and accessories, while the proprietary two-piece receiver is unique to the Backland platform. The rifle feeds from Crusader Arms proprietary 5-round magazines, with six magazines included.
