It's important to know that when the AR-15 platform is adapted to shoot 9mm, the bolt hold-open is moved forward to account for the shorter cartridge. That means if you use a standard carbine buffer, the bolt will be traveling back further than necessary and when the bolt catch is activated it's going to have a 'running start' that can lead to bolt catch breakage. This buffer with its extended length reduces the bolt travel to a more appropriate length. You can check this by retracting your bolt till it bottoms out on the buffer, and observing the gap between the bolt and the bolt catch -- it should be around ¼".
The buffer is quite heavy at 7.5oz due to being made of solid stainless steel. The extra weight will slow down the bolt and keep the chamber closed a little longer (remember with a 9mm AR it is a simple blowback action rather than a locking bolt). This may be just the ticket if you're using hotter rounds or if casings are getting shredded during extraction.
